Leaning Chimney? Push Piers to the Rescue!
Challenge
Damien, a Colorado Springs homeowner, just purchased his home and has big plans to renovate it. Before he can start those projects he wants to address a big issue with his house: the foundation. Damien noticed that his chimney is starting to pull away from his house which he knows cannot be good.
Damien called Thrasher to have us inspect the problem, so one of our Sales Design Specialists, Rob, went over and gave it a look. After doing a full inspection of the home, Rob reassured Damien that the problem wasn't as bad as he expected. The solution would actually be quite simple. After hearing this, Damien decided that Thrasher was the best company for this job.
Solution
It's actually quite common for chimneys to settle, and it can happen for a few reasons. The most common cause is from back-fill soil sinking and no longer being able to support the structure. Another common reason that chimneys settle is actually because of gutters and downspouts. If these two systems cannot get water far enough away from the foundation, this settlement can occur.
To support the chimney, we installed two push piers. Push piers can permanently stabilize a home's foundation and in many cases can even revert the home back to its original level. Push piers are steel tubes that are driven through steel brackets and transfer the home's weight from unstable soil to competent soil or bedrock. Now, the chimney is permanently supported without having to rely on the soil. As you can see in the photo attached, the gaps that were created by the settlement are now closed!
